After nearly four decades, Spaceballs is finally getting a sequel — and it’s bringing back some familiar faces. Amazon MGM Studios has officially greenlit the long-awaited follow-up to Mel Brooks’ 1987 sci-fi parody classic, with a planned theatrical release in 2027.

Mel Brooks, now 98, will reprise his beloved role as Yogurt, and is also serving as a producer on the film. In a statement, Brooks quipped, “In a world of sequels, prequels, reboots, and franchise fatigue — we’re proudly making all of them… at once.”

Fans of the original will be thrilled to hear that Rick Moranis is also returning as the iconic villain Dark Helmet — marking a rare return to live-action for the actor, who stepped away from Hollywood in the late 1990s. Bill Pullman is confirmed to return as Lone Starr, with his real-life son Lewis Pullman joining the cast as his on-screen son, Starburst. Daphne Zuniga will also reprise her role as Princess Vespa.

Joining the original cast are new faces, including Josh Gad, who co-wrote the screenplay alongside Benji Samit and Dan Hernandez. Gad is also set to star in the film and is serving as a co-producer. Actress Keke Palmer has been cast in a major new role named Destiny, though plot details remain under wraps.

Josh Greenbaum (known for Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar and Strays) is attached to direct. The project is being developed in collaboration with Brooksfilms and Imagine Entertainment.

Gad confirmed in a recent interview that the script is complete and has received enthusiastic approval from Brooks himself. Production is expected to begin as early as late 2025.

While few story details have been released, the new Spaceballs film is rumored to poke fun at the explosion of modern franchise filmmaking — continuing the legacy of satirical comedy that made the original a cult classic.

With Brooks at the helm and a mix of old and new talent on board, Spaceballs 2 is shaping up to be a bold return to ludicrous speed.
